Ventimiglia is the ‘flowered entrance’ of Italy and the last Italian city before reaching, after a few kilometres, the French border. Ventimiglia is a modern city with quite a history. Its prehistoric traces that are found on its territory, the roman patrimony conserved in the archaeological area of Nervia and the presence of a medieval historical centre among the most important in Liguria.For its geographic position, already in the past important passage towards Gallia, today Ventimiglia has the role of an irreplaceable international road and railway junction, point of pause and passage.Crossed by the Roja river, the city is divided in two parts. High on the cliff, the medieval centre protected by walls, with its historical buildings and its narrow alleys. Along the beach, the more modern city with its eclectic style buildings, shops and promenade embellished with palm trees, gardens and equipped beach premises.Ventimiglia is now a city at the vanguard of commerce from all fields with well equipped shops, boutiques, jewellery and handicraft shops. Pleasant city with mild climate, offers to visitors and tourists comfortable premises to relax, stay or eat, going from hotels to recreational and sport establishments.In the back, the Maritime Alps and the Valley of the Roja and the Nervia, easily reachable through its picturesque streets and old villages.Longing the coast towards France for a few kilometres, there is the small village of Mortola Inferiore with the Hanbury Garden, one of the most important acclimatization gardens in the world created in 1867 by an Englishman, Sir Thomas Hanbury. The garden is situated on a coast side coming down towards the sea, with species of the rarest plants coming from all the world. There are approximately 2000 species cohabiting on a surface of 18 hectares, thanks to the extremely mild climate of this part of the Coast.Continuing towards the French border, one remains surprised by the irresistible fascination of nature and the testimonies of the remotest eras. The high wall of the red cliff called ‘Balzi Rossi’, in whose cavities precious historical evidences have been recovered, impresses every traveller. |
